Up Bay Pride 2017: Gender Revolution
UpBayPride 2017 events include a gala event and dance, the Jewel Box Jam on the 10th of June; an open-air festival, Pride Fest on the Green on the 11th of June, and a memorial to mark the one year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub Massacre in Orlando, Florida.
The theme for this year’s events is “Gender Revolution” in light of the significant strides the culture is making towards acceptance of the fact that gender is not dictated by the sex organs one is born with. “Led by our youth, the Gender Revolution signifies that people recognize how the simple male/female designation limits them,” said Rebecca Nord, Managing Director, Solano Pride Center “Gender now is seen more as a continuum than either male or female. Young people are establishing their own identity now, creating space for their own uniqueness as an individual, and expressing themselves in many ways both along the gender continuum, and outside of it.”
Besides being a celebration of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning / Queer (LGBTQ) community, this is also a fundraiser for the Solano Pride Center, a 501(c)3 charity established in 1998. The center is embarking on a fundraising campaign with the goal to be the opening of a LGBTQ Center in downtown Vallejo.
“Solano Pride Center is working toward establishing a second center in Vallejo to better serve the Vallejo and Benicia LGBTQ communities,” said Rebecca Nord, Managing Director, Solano Pride Center. “We recognize the need we have in these communities and are raising funds to be in a position to support them.”
